the distinctive form of the hotel tofana draws directly from the surrounding snow-topped mountain range in st. kassian in the badia valley, italy. the clear concept in which italian firm noa* applied was to create a new ‘explorer’s home’; a spirit which the owners’ of the hotel wanted to distill to the guests.

‘from building to landscape: the design celebrates the evolutionary transformation of an originally compact building – into a layered structural landscape that sustainably reflects its surroundings…’lukas rungger, noa* architecture

throughout the interior and exterior, all the spaces are linked through the terraces and balconies in which noa* architecture have used to encircle the landscape. spacious window surfaces and the terraced structure allow light to enter into the interior. at the same time, the terraces are merged by vertical elements in the form of stairs and ramps and in turn, create a path-like character that winds up and around the building to the roof where there is a ‘summit cross’.

the refurbished hotel combines the personalities of the family-owned hotel (founded in 1933) and uses two owners’ love of sport as a theme throughout. as a result the building visualizes as an abstracted version of a mountain, while the outer silhouette mimics the tree-lined mountain peaks sitting behind.

the various lounges and restaurants can be found on the ground floor; they follow the alternating natural landscape of the badia valley. the harmonious materiality of the house is based on local sustainable elements, with the furniture and sofas are colored in blue, green and brown tones –suggesting alpine meadows, biotopes, moss forests or rock caves.
