surrounded by green fields, the ‘gnana illam residence’ designed by noel jerald v is a cubed volume that rotates around open and semi-enclosed spaces. located in the rural area of ammapatti, in the dindigul district of tamil nadu in india, the building reinterprets its vernacular architecture using eco-friendly building technology. constructed from stabilized mud blocks, the entire façade is finished in the exposed material, which is locally and readily available. reviving its application in a modern and efficient way, the earthy color and texture is revealed throughout the versatile house.

the project was listed shortlisted for the IDF awards 2013, a recent competition organized by designboom, in collaboration with the the india design forum (IDF)

connecting the volume with the street, the entrance is accentuated by double-height courtyard with jasmine creepers and integrated green landscaping. vistas of the western ghat mountains and adjacent farm lands are framed by large and small openings in the façade. the internal layout reflects the inhabitants lifestyle with a rectangular grid that is interrupted by outdoor terraces. large strips of kadappa louvers on all sides help to keep it well lit and ventilated, offering views of the garden and a sense of privacy.
