the industrial technology research institute in taiwan hosted three public art works made by noiz architects, in collaboration with local artists and craftsmen. titled ‘voxel scape’, ‘mountain scape’, and ‘holed scape’, each work integrates traditional techniques and materials realized using computer-generated design and building methods. as the main structures is cube-like in form, variations of the shape served as the basis for the three creations, with each representing a specific region of taiwan or japan (the home of noiz’s second office).

‘voxel scape’, made with lin kuo long of shuili snake kiln, is visually similar to the dynamic natural landscape of nantou. the central region is a focal point of geological force and is known for its steep, mountainous terrain. the dynamic form created manifests this energy, and is composed of ceramic cubes fired in a traditional ‘snake kiln’.

‘mountain scape’ is a simple cubic grid frame defined by dyed felt cubes in various shades of blue. the work was completed in collaboration with chen jing lin and ma yu shuo of tennii studio, and evokes a sense of infinity and depth that stretches beyond its physical parameters.

the last sculptural piece, ‘holed scape’, is made of woven bamboo slats on a computer-generated, milled frame. originating from nanto, known for high-quality bamboo and a thriving folk craft culture, the work depicts a black hole. bamboo was woven against the form — designed by noiz — by local studio yitsun stedi with guidance by mr. yeh ji shian
