noma arkitekter convert an old garage into a library on the norwegian island of tjøme

noma arkitekter have transformed the roof of an old garage into a large spacious library and workspace. the residence which is located on the norwegian island of tjøme, is defined by its geometric silhouette, using sharp angular lines and modular inserts within the construction. the renovation built upon the existing structure, by expanding the top floor in order to create a space dedicated to books.

the walls of the construction were purposely elevated in order to optimise the number of bookshelves located along the interior membrane of the upper level. noma arkitekter chose a natural palette for the room, using birch wood flooring and furniture as a way to draw attention to the colorful books on display. the open plan layout, includes a work station and kitchen that caters towards all of the reader’s immediate needs.

the windows have been integrated into the bookshelves, creating a space for one to read whilst looking out onto the garden. from the exterior, these modular inserts form a modernist impression upon the facade, and at night passers-by can see the library illuminated, revealing the treasure trove of books inside.
