hong kong based studio, oft interiors, has designed the UA cinemas in shanghai celebrating the postmodern deconstructive movement in architecture. the project attempts to participate in the style, by creating non-rectilinear shapes that visually appear with unpredictability and controlled chaos.

the lobby of the cinema is designed by oft as a key feature of the cinema, as it uses abstract forms to create the space. the rather than a flat surface the ceiling is made up of a number of irregular columns descending from the top, with lights placed in them. the various shapes appear not to evoke a sense of harmony, however, color is utilised to maintain a  connection between the disassociated parts, as champagne gold and greyish blue are used throughout.

within the seating areas and corridors, the same style has been expressed by continuing the same colors and forms that hang from the ceiling. there are more aluminium stripes with concealed lighting, which are lined neatly on the walls and made from wooden patterns. the ideas of deconstruction and construction are fused together in the VIP lounge and toilet areas, with lines and forms being used to decorate both the walls and the ceiling in striped patterns. harmony is found in the VIP section, as the seats and floor finishing are both mainly grey and blue.

the screening rooms of the cinema are designed with a far subtler approach than the common spaces. purple, grey and black colors are used alongside rectilinear shapes displayed on the wall, to create a sense of calm and allow viewers to focus on the movie.
