as part of the ongoing réinventer paris masterplan project, olivier palatre architectes’ ‘étoile voltaire’ proposal to envision ‘the cinema of tomorrow’ will be realized. the cultural scheme will accommodate five movie theaters, a restaurant, offices and topped with a verdant roof terrace and restaurant.

architecturally, the proposal sees the cinema programs inserted into the building as dynamic interventions and taking advantage of the different heights. the venue aims to promote and strengthen social energy; providing a modular and flexible space that can provide a stage of expression to other art forms and public debates through a daily active and varied program.

the scheme aims to visualize and construct a dynamic cinema which inhabits a series of different programs

the build itself is a blend between old and new, most noticeably, the roof features a floating volume housing one of the cinemas. ‘the extension project is conceived as a landscape that develops in plain city: an urban sight and a renewed imagination for the parisians. within the intensity of the city, this dreamlike landscape appears as a suspended parenthesis in time and space.’

  • Today this place is an independent, artistic, philosophic and cultural meeting place named La Générale.

There is a lot of activity, events, a lot of life… it’s completely free and open for everybody.

I don’t think Paris needs another – even a good one – restaurant or movie theater.

If we want to “re-invent” Paris we need more places like La Générale in the center of the City.

I think good architecture is about understanding the social value of a place.

    A student.
