OMA, in collaboration with oscar properties, has won the tors torn competition which will see the development of two mixed-use towers in the new hagastaden area of stockholm. the two landmark buildings will stand as the third tallest twin skyscrapers in the swedish capital defining the area and city’s growing centre, extending the downtown sector through the integration of a diverse public program.

the 100 meter high towers named ‘helix’ and ‘innovation’ will display façades that challenge the expected uniform edifice one associates with high rises. a projection of rough grooved concrete box structures–defining each of the 195 residential units–will create an alternating pattern of living spaces and introverted outdoor spaces, resulting in a geometric push and pull on the exterior skin. the upper floors of one of the towers will house a bar and exhibition space, with the ground floors of both housing a health club, library, children’s center and retail areas.

led by OMA partner reinier de graaf and associate alex de jong, the project is set to break ground in may 2015.

de graaf commented, ‘we are very proud of the new norra tornen – two tall residential towers with the largest possible articulation of the individual units, shaped through a simple play between two basic elements of architecture, the bay window and the balcony.’
