riga-based architecture studio open AD introduces ‘wool sauna‘ as the latest addition to ziedlejas – a wellness resort centered around the latvian sauna culture. incorporating wood, concrete, and natural fabrics, the design generates a safe space where guests can cleanse both body and mind, engaging in a private spiritual ritual. the wool-clad interior walls embrace individuals warmly, highlighting the healing presence of lanolin, which evaporates in the heat.

a sensory and spiritual experience that encourages introspection

focusing on a meditative approach, open AD has formed a sauna that ties in with the existing resort, yet also has its own unique energy and identity. meanwhile, every single detail contributes to generating a sensory and spiritual experience. as a first step, the team created a winding wooden walkway that leads guests towards the sauna building. not merely a practical means to get from A to B, the weaving path prepares the mind for what’s to come, encouraging introspection.

the architects placed an emphasis on craftsmanship and custom solutions in order to identify new opportunities and add new dimensions to the classic sauna experience. during breaks from the heat, one can lie back on a net among the trees to feel the closeness of nature. there’s no need to walk far to cool down in water, too – wool sauna guests have access to a private plunge pool. what’s more, the positioning of the building affords impressive views across the woods and ziedlejas as a whole. bespoke furniture and select design pieces make it easy for guests to prepare for and emerge from the experience.
