vertical orchard will host sunny workspaces at san jose's westbank campus

in continuation of the two-part development at westbank campus, the team unveils its ‘orchard’ workspaces. the two towers, alongside the single tower of orchard residences, will serve to introduce a vibrant new sense of community in san jose. westbank worked with WRNS studio to design the nature-filled office spaces as part of its larger vision of a city where its occupants work, live, and spend time — unlike the current urban sprawl which had gradually taken over the once verdant, california landscape. developed in partnership with urban community, peterson and OPtrust, the pair of ‘orchard’ buildings marks the largest of all the first five projects which make up the campus.

the WRNS studio-designed ‘orchard’ workspaces will be woven with nature and will create an active public realm for the westbank campus. sited at 300 s 1st street in san jose, a new street-level plaza will act as an urban room and gathering place, fostering a sense of community by connecting to the adjacent california theatre. by integrating greenspace and a water feature, a natural oasis will grow among the heart of san jose. above the plaza, photovoltaic panels harness the sun’s energy and provide an opportunity to collect rainwater — furthering westbank‘s initiative toward a net zero carbon footprint. the team describes the envisioned space as ‘sun-drenched, in a vibrant neighborhood where a wealth of nature is never more than a few steps away. rich with heart and vitality, the ideals built through this project shine as a beacon towards an idyllic future in the santa clara valley.’

the largest by land area and built form of all of the first five projects, the orchard offers the opportunity to express every theme westbank has been exploring for the past decade — all in one cohesive campus. the spirit of the orchard workspace and residences is envisioned as this: ‘drawing on the energy and unique heritage of san jose’s arts district, the region’s native ecological systems and agricultural history, the orchard arrives at an intersection — of life, work and natural beauty, a place where environment meets grid of innovation meets a new creative heart for the city.’
