prefer designboom on googleon the french island of corsica, orma architettura introduces ‘casa R’ — a project that is both minimalist and complex. the concrete dwelling covers just 49 square meters along a challenging lot with a rocky and sloped topography. the home is nestled within a sensitive landscape located at the very end of the village of sotta, south corsica, an area which is defined by the absence of urban development. facing the ‘omu di cagna’ mountain range, the site is characterized by a succession of boulders with a steep vertical drop.

orma architettura imagines ‘casa R’ as a stone block built to shelter a program. the austere geometry expresses a very different atmosphere toward its interior, with spaces designed with varying heights, finished with warm materials and wooden windows. in order to properly insert the volume between two rocky outcroppings, the design team generates a very simple and vertically-minded house that imposes a minimum impact on the ground. taking into account its context and a tight budget, the dwelling is very minimal and is formed as a simple volume of sandblasted concrete. this serves to highlight its rough textural quality that complements the surrounding rocks.
