ORTRAUM architects has completed its largest residential project, a house for a family of five. the project, titled ‘MK5’ sits on a south-west sloping sire on the jollas peninsula to east of helsinki’s city center in finland. the position of the house on the site allows for maximum privacy with the main spaces facing west towards the ocean, avoiding direct sight lines from the neighbors.

the main, communal living spaces have been placed on the first floor of the structure, while the second floor functions as a more intimate space where the four bedrooms connect. the façade is covered in a siberian larch timber, which ages gracefully as it interacts with the area’s changing weather conditions. ortraum’s MK5 consists of highly customized cross-laminated timber (CLT).  in addition to the building’s electrical system, the ventilation system and lighting fixtures are fully integrated into the CLT elements and hidden from sight.
