paco lago references a 1920s speakeasy to design the pastrami club in malaga

in the spanish city of malaga, design studio paco lago has realized ‘the pastrami club’ in the heart of the city’s lively nightlife area. inspired by speakeasies that were prevalent in 1920s new york due to the era of alcohol prohibition, the recently opened bar invites well-acquainted patrons in from the street through what is disguised as a fast-food stand, into an exclusive and clandestine club.

designed around the key concept of ‘surprise’ and reflecting the illicit nature of the original speakeasies, the activity of the club is shrouded from passersby. the street frontage is designed by paco lago as a simple sandwich bar, however, those in the know can access the real pastrami bar through the men’s bathroom door in the back of the shop. from here, the space transforms and guests are led into a lively world of bright neon lights and opulent marble countertops.

for the interior of the club, paco lago has focused on how the entire space is lit to create a vibrant and almost retro atmosphere. to achieve this, neon lighting has been integrated into a coffered ceiling, which extends down to the bar area, creating a curved wall effect. these lights change color and intensity, altering the mood and bringing a dynamic rhythm to the space, perfectly befitting the nightclub feeling of the club.

as for the vertical wall coverings, the design studio has selected economical, versatile and durable materials such as mirrors, vinyl coverings, lattices, metal curtains, stone and fabric. the lounge bar stands out for its marble counter behind which the illuminated retro niches that form the back of the bar shine. overall, the design intends to spark guests’ curiosity. from the upside down entrance of the men’s bathroom, to the lounge and its unique play of lights, to when you enter through the VIP access and think that you have entered hell. in short, the pastrami club is a place full of surprise.
