the european migrant crisis has continually maintained itself as one of the forefront issues in recent years. in november of 2014, the EU launched operation triton, a security measure that includes multiple surveillance aircraft, vessels, and teams of operatives to patrol the mediterranean, gather intelligence, and periodically rescue refugees.

in the time since the operation’s beginning, the number of migrants drowning while attempting the perilous journey has unceasingly increased. it has been deemed ‘face-saving, not life-saving’, and most likely will continue in the same fashion. it is the belief of many, including collaborative architecture firm 1week1project, that europe doesn’t need security; rather, it needs an effective humanitarian strategy.

‘passage’ questions the very idea of borders. in most instances, with obvious exceptions, closing access between one place and another does little to wane illegal travel. 1week1project’s conceptual work visualizes an alternative world, with nothing stopping migration from europe and africa. refugees are seen drifting into the sea in great columns, and not on an overcrowded boat on the verge of sinking. no, instead they’re seen floating on pieces of their homelands, making their way to a new life.
