perkins + will presents the new residential complex, ‘bambu atmosfera’, designed to integrate with the coastline of são paulo. located in the impressive beach area of praia grande ubatuba, the project draws inspiration from bamboo and features the material throughout to represent the idea of a harmonious relationship between nature and the built environment. the concept incorporates principles of biophilic design by bringing elements from the natural world into the building to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

bamboo serves as the main inspiration behind the project as it is a natural, low-cost material that can be sourced locally, therefore reducing the environmental impact of transportation. the façades are articulated by the architect using vertical bamboo cladding and brise-soleil panels are also implemented to allow residents to control lighting and ventilation for their own apartment.
the scheme is developed in a ‘u’ shape generating a central courtyard space that will be home to native species of trees. the layout also provides every apartment with an ocean view, further maintaining the connection to nature that ‘bambu atmosfera’ seeks to achieve. the program generates 11 residential units on each level and five different types of apartments ranging from 62m2 to 110m2. the ground floor includes secluded garden areas facing the sea and the top floor accommodates three penthouses with private terraces and gardens.
‘bambu atmosfera’ aims to encourage interaction between residents and visitors by integrating a green square to welcome people into the complex. social and service spaces are provided in the design, such as a fitness area, games room, lounge, library and laundry room. bamboo is also used in the circulation spaces in elevators and overhanging structured walkways. overall, the project by perkins + will seeks to provide a high quality lifestyle in a setting connected to nature.
