world's tallest hybrid wood tower by perkins+will is soon to rise above vancouver

architecture firm perkins+will presents ‘canada’s earth tower’ — a 340,000 square foot mixed-use development that will feature the world’s tallest hybrid wood tower. standing 35-40 stories above the vancouver cityscape, the visionary proposal will advance a comprehensive set of environmental goals in an unprecedented way. in collaboration with private developer delta group, the project will demonstrate a feasible shift toward dramatically higher environmental standards. a comprehensive material strategy, namely the use of heavy timber as the primary building structure, will ensure that ‘canada’s earth tower’ will be among the healthiest places to live and work.

the hybrid structural approach by perkins+will employs a concrete core and foundations together with floors, walls, and columns built of timber. this approach balances structural performance with dramatically reduced greenhouse gas emissions. the team, in collaboration with delta group, prioritizes the aggressive reduction of emissions in both construction and operations. as a part of the CAGBC (canada green building council) zero carbon buildings pilot program, the tower will be a zero emissions building. during operation the building will not consume fossil fuels, such as natural gas.

the building will generate emissions-free electricity on site through the use of building-integrated photovoltaic technology. creating meaningful connections to our natural environment throughout the building is a defining characteristic of the design. in collaboration with landscape architect cornelia hahn oberlander, the ‘wilding’ of the site will restore local ecologies and generate a vibrant and accessible public realm. the structure is designed to support community and dramatically improve livability in tall urban residential buildings. generous south facing winter gardens serve as shared terraces — a place to connect with neighbors while enjoying sunlight, views, and a range of plant life.
