after a competition win in 2015, peter pichler architecture has reconstructed an existing hotel amidst the italian dolomites. originally built in 1986, hotel schgaguler is situated in the village of castelrotto in northern italy – an area epitomized by the mountainous landscape. the architect’s design seeks to respect the surroundings and local context whilst following a contemporary reinterpretation of alpine style.

the design by peter pichler architecture consists of three volumes that follow the original structure of the existing hotel. the exoskeleton façade is designed to consider the orientation and differing functions of the building, for example, a deeper façade is employed at the southern elevation to provide natural shading. the color of the façade relates to the context as the bright grey color is inspired by the rocks of neighboring mountains. vernacular elements have also been incorporated, such as the sloped roof which is prevalent in the northern italian area.

the design of the hotel is characterized by simple yet functional interiors and local materials have been specified such as chestnut wood and local stones and textiles. the ground floor houses public spaces including the lobby, bar and restaurant, and on the upper levels you can find the rooms and suites. there is also an underground level which is home to spa, beauty and wellness facilities. in essence, peter pichler’s reconstruction aims to connect to the surrounding environment by considering the local context and vernacular identity whilst creating contemporary and timeless spaces.
