a small wine-bar in udine

Italian interiors studio Visual Display curates a small wine-bar, aptly named Piccolo Bar, which has been born on the ashes of an historic plot in the city of Udine. With only 28 square meters of administration under the arcades of Palazzo D’Aronco in the center of Udine, Piccolo Bar is a place dedicated to the enhancement of local wines together with tapas and a selection of the best prosciutto by Dall ‘Ava.

The renovation is informal but refined, with more than one level of perception of the space — between the old and the new — and a lot of details to be discovered little by little; it’s characterized by the use of the aqua-green color block that covers all surfaces, leaving traces of the past.

visual display focuses on ‘removing rather than adding’

Visual Display (see more here) presents its Piccolo Bar in Udine as part of a partnership with international brand IE Italian Excellence di Dall’Ava. The design concept focuses on removal rather than addition — removing the unnecessary walls and interventions carried out over time, bringing to light the room’s original height. According to a purely functional logic, the team makes use of all the niches and the resulting spaces. The project further sees the restoration of the original historic terrazzo along the floors.

Large rattan chandeliers — a material that also characterizes some other furnishing elements — float and entirely fill the ceiling allowing a glimpse of the wide height of the space that continues beyond them, with the original skylight that lets the sunlight through.piccolo bar udine

Visual Display conceives the countertop of its Piccolo Bar in Udine as a puzzle to take full advantage of space and functionality. This countertop is an assemblage of wooden blocks sourced from a single exotic wood trunk. Meanwhile, a large bottle rack occupies the entire wall facing the counter, taking shape as a raw iron tubular structure with leather and wood details. This element displays the refined selection of mainly regional wines.

Indoor and outdoor are one, with a big freestanding tapas showcase at the center, facing towards the convivial tables under the arcade.
