‘pine pavilion’ is located near the village of xiahuangyu, and spans a paved path along the songyin river in china. this tourism infrastructure enables cyclists and hikers to experience the region, and creates a perfect opportunity for an architectural addition to the landscape. designed by DnA_design and architecture, the structure was assembled with prefabricated elements on site, and features an art installation in the free spaces between the built areas. the artwork presents a creative interpretation of the historical production of pine resin in the neighboring village.

the elongated hall consists of four segments. the building elements are separated by glass, which serves as a screen to view the an artistically-illustrated interpretation of the production of pine resin. the wooden pavilion — with its clear constructive structure — serves as a resting place at the dam on the river, and provides information about a traditional methods of resin production. ‘it consequently combines information about the location with a tourism infrastructure that links history and future for visitors in a playful manner,’ the architects describe.

DnA designed a series of square boxes brought together by large wooden beams. in fact, the structure vaguely resembles van der rohe’s S. R. crown hall — from further away, it could a locomotive. while not implicitly ornamental, a close inspection reveals that the true beauty of this structure is a combination of an interesting plan, layout and masterful woodwork. walking through the halls, the horizon is filled with a picturesque mountain range appearing blue on foggy days.
