yont studio transforms former office into hybrid record store

In Berlin’s Mitte district, YONT Studio transforms a former real estate office on Torstraße into a hybrid record store and cultural space for the queer house music label SEVEN. The 180-square-meter interior moves beyond the conventional retail shop format, combining vinyl sales with listening stations, label offices, a photo studio, live DJ streaming infrastructure, and areas for community gatherings. Located at Torstraße 220, the project, a platform that supports the local music community, situates itself within a neighborhood historically tied to Berlin’s club culture.

Sculptural furniture from the studio’s Brutalist Pink series appears within the space, including a monolithic DJ booth developed for the store. Set against exposed brickwork and patched plaster revealed through a subtractive renovation, the object introduces a contrasting architectural presence within the raw material interior. The DJ booth will later be presented during Salone del Mobile 2026 in Milan alongside a Brutalist Pink vinyl listening station from the same series.

the team exposes berlin building’s raw material layers

The Berlin-based architects at YONT Studio remove layers of previous renovations to reveal brick masonry, patched plaster, and structural irregularities embedded in the building. By clearing partitions and exposing the material shell, the space gains height and visual openness. Raw surfaces are paired with limewash paint and acoustic ceiling spray, adding roughness to the character of the space with acoustic functionality for music playback and live sessions.

The program distributes multiple uses within a single open environment. Alongside the record store, the interior accommodates vinyl listening areas, label workspaces, an open kitchen, and spaces for events. Curtains act as movable architectural elements that can divide or open the room depending on the activity.

This system allows the interior to shift between daily retail operations and collective scenarios such as DJ streams, gatherings, or performances. The fluid layout reinforces the idea of the store as a social infrastructure connected to Berlin’s queer house scene.

custom furniture and the brutalist pink series

YONT Studio developed a series of bespoke elements specifically for the project. Stainless steel display units and solid oak vinyl storage systems organize the retail functions while maintaining a restrained material palette. Vintage pieces are introduced throughout the interior to soften the industrial character of the exposed shell.

Among the most distinctive objects are pieces from the studio’s Brutalist Pink series that features sculptural forms, finished with pigmented epoxy over shaped foam, introducing a contrasting visual language within the otherwise raw environment.

Two pieces from the Brutalist Pink series extend the project beyond the Berlin store and into the design exhibition circuit. The Brutalist Pink – DJ Booth, originally developed for live sets and streaming sessions within the SEVEN space, is evokes the mass of brutalist concrete, built on a wooden substructure and clad in dense foam that is hand-shaped before receiving a pigmented epoxy coating. A second object, the Brutalist Pink – Vinyl Listening Station, develops the same material and construction logic in a more compact format. Designed as an integrated listening object, it combines record storage, playback surface, and acoustic positioning within a single sculptural volume.

The piece is constructed on a wooden frame layered with dense foam and finished with pigmented epoxy and paint. Although visually monolithic, its internal reinforcement and balanced proportions are designed to reduce vibration transfer during playback while maintaining the sculptural clarity of the object. Like the DJ Booth, the listening station originated as a digital study before being translated into a physical prototype and is produced in limited, made-to-order quantities with Berlin-based fabricators.
