måns tham completes triangular cabin in sweden

stockholm-based practice måns tham arkitektkontor has built a prefabricated A-frame ski lodge in edsåsdalen, northern sweden. settling amid the alpine landscape, the wooden cabin adopts a distinctive triangular shape with curved dormer windows, looking like a small mountain top itself. thanks to a selection of skilled builders, and carpenters, the house is meticulously constructed in detail, with custom solutions and furniture pieces completing the design.

varying rooms with surprising characters

built with prefabricated A-frames, the wooden cabin stands out because of its curved dormer windows. in the winter, the snow piles up on the unique roofing, becoming a final design element that merges house and landscape. the tent-like shape of the lodge is as basic and traditional as can be. however, on the inside,  the curved dormers result in sequences of rooms with varying and surprising auras. wood panels clad the interior in its entirety, but each room has its own geometric character.

the design by måns tham arkitektkontor (find more here) generates a series of interior spaces that change every five meters. the upper level is naturally much smaller but the five-meter-wide dormers compensate, giving the impression of a spacious living environment. the house is built in five sections with long sightlines. occupants move towards the light and can see through the full length of the building, while standing in any of the cabin’s rooms.

interior details

the floorplan is specifically designed to allow for free-roaming and to offer extended views of the mountainous surroundings. all rooms -even the master bedroom and the spa- are conceived as parts of a continuous flow. to achieve this, the house practically integrates hidden full-height sliding doors in its wooden structure.

in the living room, the architects have installed a fireplace using glazed fire bricks, so that every surface can be clad with the same material which makes it into quite a monolith. these bricks are thin so it was possible to mount them forming a smooth faceted curve. the assymetrical opening had to be drawn in detail, brick by brick to get it right and make it work.
