Casa Manire: A Modern Retreat in the Peruvian Jungle

Casa Manire, designed as a collaboration between Lima-based architect Martin Dulanto and architecture practice Puna Estudio, is a newly completed residential project located outside Puerto Maldonado, Peru. Drawing inspiration from the mid-century Case Study Houses by Charles and Ray Eames and the understated design of Japanese forest cabins, the project offers a contemporary refuge for disconnecting from urban life and immersing in nature.

The house is situated on a family-owned property with deep historical and emotional significance. Owned by Yerko Zlatar, Creative Director of Puna Estudio, the site once belonged to his grandparents, who used it as a working farm. Surrounded by dense jungle, the property retains remnants of its past, including ancient stone ruins and thriving plantations of bananas, cacao, and tea.

pune estudio’s mid-century inspiration

Overlooking the its namesake river, Casa Manire takes full advantage of its natural setting with architecture by Martin Dulanto and Puna Estudio. The sound of the flowing water enhances the sense of calm, creating a serene environment that encourages introspection and connection to the landscape. The design harmonizes respectfully with the lush surrounding plant-life and integrates the family’s heritage while respecting the ecological sensitivity of the location.

Influenced by the Eames’ Case Study Houses, the design emphasizes functional simplicity, open spaces, and the integration of indoor and outdoor living. The house also draws from the minimalist approach of Japanese forest cabins, focusing on a balance between the built environment and nature. This deliberate simplicity enhances the feeling of escape and reconnection, making Casa Manire a true retreat from urban life.
