boasting sweeping views of the london skyline, the sky garden at rafael viñoly‘s 20 fenchurch street tower is now open. the project, which is located at the pinnacle of the uruguayan architect’s much-discussed ‘walkie talkie’ tower, is comprised of three storeys of landscaped vegetation, positioned beneath a large glass dome. the scheme also features various observation decks as well as an open air terrace overlooking the city below.

designed to create an open and vibrant place of public leisure, entry to the sky garden is free – however bookings must be made in advance via the park’s website.

landscape architecture practice gillespies were responsible for the project’s vegetation, with a series of planted terraces occupied with drought resistant mediterranean and south african species. beginning at level 35, the sky garden is supported by the building’s structural fins which support and span the open terrace, forming a large portal frame. these 1.2 meter deep fins also support the glazing over the top and sides of the park’s enclosure.
