guha by RAW architecture is a place that combines a diversity of programs on one site in taman villa meruya, indonesia. the most recent intervention picks up where the architect left off as the project involves the renovation of an existing building by RAW, called the guild, and the design of a new space named guha bambu at the east side of the plot.

the entire program of the complex comprises omah library, a dental clinic, a private residence and RAW architecture’s own studio – guha bambu. for the renovation of the first building, space has been added to the omah library, providing more storage for book shelves, a bookstore and a gallery. circulation of the complex has also been reconfigured to divide public and private, which is now solved by separating access at the entrance.

the new building, guha bambu is a three storey bamboo structure, with two additional basement levels. to erect the structure, RAW built upon a technique from the experimental school of alfa omega. the construction separates the steel truss structure, with the bamboo structure supporting the three floor plates under a steel roof. the floor plan is flexible and open, allowing for the program to be adapted for future uses. the construction was realized by generations of craftsman from west java and integrates the traditional fish mouth joint in bamboo with more modern methods and materials such as steel.

the construction of guha employs nine key materials to reflect the experimentation of craftsmanship within RAW architecture’s studio: steel, wood, glass, metal, gypsum, bamboo, plastic, stone and concrete. the building is also designed to address the tropical climate. the facades, made of concrete and vertical steel and bamboo louvres, are open to the north and south and closed at the west side. abundant vegetation also characterizes the project, bringing nature into the architecture and making the buildings appear like they have been on the site for centuries.
