meandering paths wind through two coastal houses by react architects in paros, greece
the paths meander past the volumes of stone and white plaster before reaching a swimming pool terrace with views out to sea.
combining elements of cycladic architecture with a contemporary design language, react architects has realized two homes on the greek island of paros. located within a small fishing village called drios, the site of the new residences boasts idyllic views out to sea and the neighboring island of naxos.

stone walls surround the site of the houses, offering residents increased privacy. the main entrance is found on the west side of the plot, where a meandering path allows views out to sea and leads through volumes composed of contrasting stone and white plaster. by doing this, react architects celebrates moving through the site and evokes the sense of a small settlement. the volumes also create enclosed courtyards, protected from the prevailing north winds.

each residence is designed over two storys. the living room and kitchen are positioned on the first floor and the master bedroom on the second. on the west side of the plot, and at a distance from the central volume, there are three guest rooms. the central two-story volumes of the houses line up towards the view and a courtyard is designed with a view out to the sea. the swimming pool is placed on the extension of the front terrace. the courtyards are positioned next to the living areas. the exterior spaces are used in order to create a unified residential complex.

the architectural character of the buildings is further emphasized by the design of the openings, while recesses are cut into the volumes to provide areas of shading. the design of the buildings is a dialectic of local and modern architecture, combining the proportions of volumes, the aesthetics of the façades, open spaces and colors in a residential ensemble.
