Pragmatica Architectural Studio introduces OTAGH-E-SHEKAR

Pragmatica Architectural Design Studio introduces OTAGH-E-SHEKAR, a residential project that redefines a pre-existing buried room within the natural landscape of Alborz, Iran. Originally used for storage and seclusion, the room underwent an expansion process, transforming it into a multifunctional space that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. The project initiated with the demolition of a stone retaining wall, allowing for the attachment of an extension, particularly for a thermal bath. The removal of the wall necessitated the installation of a steel framing structure to support the ceiling and soil above the old room. Material selection played a crucial role in the project, with raw iron chosen for its ability to integrate, expand, and differentiate within the existing foundation.

OTAGH-E-SHEKAR metallic villa interacts with its natural context

The design team at Pragmatica Architectural Design Studio aimed to create a unique atmosphere, deviating from conventional villa settings and focused on connecting with nature. The expansion evolved beyond the initial idea of a platform for relaxation, incorporating features like a thermal bath, a cooking area, and a fire pit. The metal room, concealed beneath the main villa, was strategically shaped from within, emphasizing the project’s inside-out perspective. The space, no longer merely a storage chamber for fishing equipment, now serves as a dynamic environment with various activation scenarios, encompassing a thermal bath, gathering area, and river-facing views—all emerging harmoniously within the landscape. The project unfolds as a nuanced intervention that reshapes the existing space, allowing it to organically expand and interact with its natural context.
