permanent SMK extension by reiulf ramstad arkitekter

Norwegian firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter reveals its winning competition design for a permanent extension at the Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK) in Doverrode, a small coastal town located in the South of Thy, Denmark. This new addition will strengthen the national museum‘s vision of making the country’s most extensive art collection accessible to a broader section of the population – including those who live far from the main museum in Copenhagen. According to the architects, the goal is to welcome by 2024 at least 35,000 visitors annually inside the permanent SMK extension for exhibition and dissemination of the museum’s unique collection of more than 260,000 works of art.

transforming the old warehouse, silo & surrounding landscape

This new extension at SMK (see more here) seeks to transform the old warehouse, Doverodde Købmandsgård, the former silo, and the scenic landscape surrounding these historic buildings. Seeing as both buildings hold a very different starting point and potential, the team at Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter saw the opportunity to develop their proposal by creating a similar structural approach to transforming these two historical landmarks: a new museum within the existing walls. This will allow a new and contemporary museum to take shape, equipped with the necessary requirements, including a stable indoor climate, sensitive and protective installations, and low energy use.

The soon-to-be-renovated Doverodde Købmandsgården will serve as a café and restaurant with conference facilities. The administration will be situated at the front gable close to the museum and the new entrance house — the latter, a new signature pavilion connecting two attractions, the museum and nature facilities.
