renovation by o o c inc. preserves old japanese house’s character

Architect Takuma Hashimoto from o o c inc. takes over the renovation of a private residential unit in Awaji, Japan, and its conversion into a restaurant and boutique. The site survey reveals a history of expansions, reductions, and repairs of the old Japanese house as well as an interesting variation of materials infused in the structure. Incorporating the unusual ‘landscape’ of materials, the design of ‘inaya’ preserves the fragments of the initial architectural elements as a symbol of the composition’s former life and arranges new features gradually shifting from ‘artificial’ to ‘natural’ setting up a ‘material timeline’.

wild plantation takes over the built space

The design team demolishes the internal wall of the oldest western room of the house due to inaccessibility. The gradual dismantling of the soil block exposes a wild plantation that eventually becomes part of the architectural concept defining the transformation of ‘inaya’. Preserving the original state and the natural formation of the vegetation, the space composes a symbolic scene within the interior. With the intention of expanded sprouting, the soil is left uncovered as an abstract arrangement of stones opens space for plants to grow inviting nature into the structure.
