new york-based firm REX has shared its competition entry for berlin’s nationalgalerie20, with a proposal conceived as a counterpoint to mies van der rohe’s neighboring neue nationalgalerie.

herzog & de meuron was recently chosen to construct the new museum building as part of the city’s famed kulturforum complex in germany. intended as a ‘place of encounter’, the structure will provide increased and additional gallery space for mies’ iconic building — which has become too small to properly exhibit the museum’s artwork.

REX’s proposal forms a functional ‘objet trouvé’ for the framing of 20th century art. rather than offering a ‘blank slate’, a typology that the architects say has become constrictive, the design seeks to provide built-in tools that curators can use to display various collections. in terms of its layout, a gradational grid of galleries facilitates self-navigation, while maintaining diversity in room character, size, and proportion.

in order to house the requirements of the program within the plot, the floorplate is doubled. while both floors follow the same gridded gradation, the characters of galleries are unique on each floor. the level 2 floor slab is tilted, raising the galleries’ heights from 5 meters at the south to 6.75 meters at its northern end. below, on level 1, the galleries’ heights transition conversely.

see the gallery at the bottom of the page for more information on the proposal in the words of the architects.
