riverstone by daniel libeskind

riverstone is a new commercial and retail complex currently being built in incheon, south korea. the multi-faceted design was created by studio daniel libeskind, the firm’s third project in korea. expected to be complete in 2013, the building will house a shopping mall, department store, cinema, ice rink, food court and two pedestrian bridges. the concept behind the structure is inspired by the relationship between nature and the city. the flow of the space was conceived of as water flowing through rocks in a river. while the flow focuses on the human scale, the structure is composed of larger volumes which relate to the scale of the city. the location of the complex is right in the center of new songdo city’s retail district.

  • It’s so hideous. The average sub-urban mall is just bland. This foolish looking building tries (and fails) to elevate a box to something it should never be. I’m glad this is not being built in the US.

    Jakara Laosi says:
  • This is terrible. Daniel Libeskind is becoming the developer’s schlock artist of choice. He’s reduced design to a few dumb shapes that stick out like a sore thumb. This is not design. I feel sorry for the staff who crank out this dross in his office.

    Marek Pincovic says:
  • @jakara and @marek

Sorry, but who are you? Are you guys architects? Or even designers?

How can you say this isn’t design. What gives you the confidence to conclude that “this is not design”? Marek, what is design then, genius?

As a student of architecture, I come to this with an educated opinion. The building is, quite simply, beautiful. Its creative, unique and plain unconventional. This, is what true architecture stands for… The complete expression of the style of the architect.

This building screams Libeskind. I just wish there was more of that noise everywhere.
