construction began yesterday on the louisiana cancer research center – one of the first new major construction projects to begin in new orleans since hurricane katrina.

designed by international architects RMJM, the 175,000-square-foot building includes flexible research space, office space and support laboratories for 72 principal researchers and their teams.   the building will be very much part of the community with human-scaled, glass-walled lobby that serves as welcoming front porch. the design will allow staff to connect with each other with a series of informal meeting spaces. the center is expected to be completed by 2011 and will also revitalize the city’s downtown.
