working alongside arup and schlaich bergermann und partner, rogers stirk harbour + partners has developed their first soccer stadium, to be built in the venezuelan city of caracas. nestling against the hillside and providing panoramic views across the city, a lightweight, brightly-colored roof canopy is designed to embody the spirit and vibrancy of the city and its population. the venue is part of a masterplan for the area, entitled ‘la rinconada’. this larger scheme involves a new transport interchange, (also designed by RSHP), and a metropolitan park comprising a range of sporting facilities.

‘the hillside site created an unusual challenge and the design reflects this with terraces cut into the landscape giving way to a series of floating esplanades that provide access to the various levels of stadium’, explained simon smithson, lead partner at rogers stirk harbour + partners.
