rojkind arquitectos has recently completed their latest addition to the northern city of monterrey in mexico. ‘highpark’ has been conceived as a mixed-use scheme consisting of eight levels of residential combined with underground parking and, finished off with the commercial retail spaces on the first two floors. the apartments have direct access to to green terraces and balconies, so that a strong connection to the outdoors is established.

the building overlooks the mountainous landscape

constructed to integrate with its climatic and geographical context, the structure is designed to be ‘a building for the city’, exemplified by the combination of the public plaza, pedestrian realm and an array of outdoor shaded spots. the interesting form of the scheme has been modeled to react to the angle of the sun; each floor plate subtly shifting to create a dialog of light and shadow. meanwhile, the exterior uses local-sourced stone to keep the building cool in the summer months, as well as a decorative element.

michel rojkind from rojkind arquitectos: ‘people enjoy the convenience of a house for its connection to a garden, or exterior spaces, which normally apartments lack. by having a project which integrates, not only terraces but real gardens even at the upper levels, we have achieved an experience unique to monterrey.’

landscaped public areas have been placed in front of the building

the first two levels are designated for retail commercial programs

the shifting floor plates and levels create balconies at different heights
