roman plyus applies terracotta plaster and reclaimed tiles to restaurant in budapest
the stylish concept bar and luxury restaurant is situated inside a former textile factory dating back to the 20th century.
situated in a historical part of budapest, ‘buha|i|rest’ is the latest dining hotspot to open its doors in the hungarian capital. designed by interior architect roman plyus, the space, which sits inside a former textile factory dating back to the 20th century, has been reimagined into a stylish concept bar and luxury restaurant with terracotta plaster.

the 1148 ft2 (350 m2) space has been divided by plyus into a bar on one side and a more intimate lounge space on the other. terracotta was selected as the main color in an effort to maintain a balance between the old red-brick factory exterior and the contemporary interior. the application of this warm hue helps the space softly transition from one era to another.

most of the existing concrete arches and ceiling have been retained and exposed within the new interior design. throughout the restaurant, the material palette is composed of hand-glazed tiles, decorative terracotta plaster and marble walls and bar. clay-colored leather cushions have been used to dress the bench seats, while reclaimed tiles adorn the floor, seamlessly blending new with old, past with present.

the design also embraces ideas of sustainability with menus and coasters made of upcycled paper and plastic. the surprise in the space is the huge sculpture of KAWS ‘small lie’, which is a great find for instagrammers. the modular sculpture in the sofa area is handmade by local craftsmen, inspired by alexander calder. plyus comments, ‘the client wanted an ultra modern space juxtaposed with vintage pierre jeanneret chairs, which he left from the last project, with dramatic feelings, instagram views and a friendly atmosphere.’
