photographer rui cardoso captures aires mateus' new atelier in lisbon

portuguese photographer rui cardoso shares the clean architecture and elaborate interiors found in aires mateus’ new office ‘atelier cecilio de sousa’ in lisbon, portugal. the famed architecture firm sees its new studio space open in a restored, classic home. complete with intricate mouldings and colorful frescoes, the office is light and open, ideal to inspire the architects for upcoming masterpieces.

the historical decor that clads the atelier’s interiors, contrasts the white, geometric exteriors of the house. the photographer captured both in a similar light, allowing viewers to understand the building’s aesthetic dichotomy. the interiors seem to have been a historical palace, while the white, minimal exteriors seem to belong in a greek island complete with a small pool.

the spaces seem grand and inviting, bringing in plenty natural light for a comfortable work environment. the photographer captures the open-ness and the warmth of the interiors, conveying a cozy office atmosphere. rui cardoso’s poetic approach to photography, and his own background in architecture result in a stunning record of aires mateus’ new space.

after completing his architecture degree in the university of porto, rui cardoso started working closely with manuel aires mateus in his atelier in lisbon where he developed a keen interest in architectural photography. after 4 years of working together he decided to dedicate himself entirely to photography. through his imagery he always tries to introduce a poetic and sensible approach focusing on light, shadow, texture and materiality. the photographer loves analog photography and he exclusively works with film.
