rusty red wooden guesthouse by ludescher + lutz revitalizes rhine valley town in germany
the architects compare the new structure to a piece of furniture bringing new vitality into the historical town.
seeking to bring new vitality to the alter market area in rhine valley town, germany, architecture firm ludescher + lutz architekten has constructed a new central hotel + restaurant with wooden façades. the new building respects the rich history of the area which has been a quite popular destination since the mid-19th century, but has been decreasing in value ever since. the new inn takes the place of the former ‘enel’ guesthouse, serving as the first step towards reviving the town center, reflecting the previous historic buildings of the area in both size and shape.

the entrances to the new guesthouse by ludescher + lutz architekten, are all connected through a broad hallway, aligned along a north-south axis, while the separate entrance to the hotel is oriented towards the west. additional access from a side street to the south allows unobtrusive deliveries to the kitchen and storage. meanwhile, two dining rooms are integrated into the building, with one accommodating 28 and the other 60 guests. on entering, customers are received in a generous central hallway, flanked by a bar and reception desk.

the façade has been dressed in a deep, warm, rusty red, a tone found already among several neighboring wooden structures. choosing wood as a material, and the warm color is intended to be a contrast to the unattractive street crossing, plagued by traffic. the upper stories of the façade are fitted with wooden slats, concealing the interior and providing privacy to the guests.
