seoul has just acquired a new cultural space designed by SAMOO in wanting to pay tribute to its site in the northeastern part of south korea’s capital–in nowon district which was once a field of reeds, and is bordered by the suraksan and bukhansan mountains–the local firm has conceived the ‘buk seoul museum of art’ as a cultural hill. the new institution revitalizes the surrounding region, offering a nature-friendly space that integrates park with museum seamlessly, executed through a series of diversified connection patterns which link the interior with the exterior–a place where people, nature and art converge into a single entity.

exhibition galleries, on the museum’s various levels, are positioned around a central atrium. the basement serves as an educational and multi-purpose facility, while the first floor is home to a library, multimedia facility and exhibition hall, their location easily accessible for children and teenagers. the top floor and rooftop gardens, where an outdoor sculpture park can be found, provide a continuous flow around the built environment and the natural landscape, thus creating an extension of the museum into the green space.

SAMOO has designed the ‘buk seoul art museum’ as a sustainable piece of architecture, taking into consideration the orientation of the building as well as the façade’s composition in a way that minimizes cooling loads and maximizes energy efficiencies. the integration of intense rooftop gardening and cool-tube effects from perforated walls, aim to aid in minimizing heat island effects as a result of the densely populated area in which it is located. the ‘buk seoul art museum’ is scheduled to officially open to the public in september 2013.
