continuing experiments for their ‘update 04’ workshop in the hills of camigliano, italy, sa.und.sa architetti has completed the construction of ‘mik-a-el chapel’. built alongside 17 students from various parts of italy, the chapel responds to the request of the town’s citizens for a room for meditation and prayer. as such, a site near the cave of saint michael was selected for its highly symbolic connotations linked to religion. the immaculate atmosphere is created in biological symbiosis with rocky walls enclosing a prevailing silence sometimes broken by the dripping stalactites. the work focuses on questions regarding the inhabitation of the landscape and the dialogue among the new, the ancient, and the ancestral. the comparison is expressed by a two-dimensional dialectic, according to which hierarchies are not assigned versus time, but compared to the position of things in space. correspondingly, the occupiable structure consists of wooden, stone, and metal elements that work in relation to one another. the standing platform of lumber circumnavigates around the natural rock formations and trees so they may still be used as seating and climbing surfaces. meanwhile, a level of privacy is granted by a system of horizontal whalers supported by a steel frame, resulting in a moire effect when viewed from the exterior.

  • A lovely fun and fresh space. I can just feel the excitement of creating and then constructing this project.
I even thought that I could smell the fresh timber! The use of steel is exceptional.
