director of schemata architects, jo nagasaka has sent us some images from their recently completed ‘sayama flat’ project. schemata is based in tokyo, while the ‘sayama flat’ is located in a 29-year-old apartment building an hour from central tokyo in the town of sayama. unlike traditional renovation projects which empty the entire residence to start fresh, schemata chose to be selective, leaving certain parts intact while others were removed. the result is a space which appears ‘in-process’ and partially complete, filled with contrasts. raw concrete is paired with polished wood and entire rooms are left bare while others remain completely finished.
