on the 10th year anniversary of the opening of the yamaguchi center for arts and media (YCAM) in japan, the company is looking to expand theiraudience base to their rich archive of multimedia collections, fully-equipped studios and laboratories, and expert on-hand staff. to do so they commissioned local architect jo nagasaka of schemata architects to design a temporary installation that would reach out to citizens of the worldand introduce them to the future of multi-directional communication. the design was approached by looking at the local chimneys, projecting elements that apart from serving a practical function indirectly serve as billboards of communication. taking abstracted speech bubble forms, the graphic representation of verbal interaction, nagasaka created three dimensional wood-framed extrusions that on the outside provide colorfulinformation and on the inside cradle small multimedia theaters. the angle of the extrusion relates directly to that of the projectors which use thecapping piece as a screen that shows YCAM video archives to the world.
