the danish schmidt hammer lassen architects have been selected as the winner of a competition to transform a former slaughterhouse into a mixed-use masterplan. the building site is located in the town of horsens in western denmark. the new masterplan will consist of a mixed-use commercial, office and cultural complex which includes some residential neighbourhoods. the development measures 70,000 m2 on a 34,000 m2 plot next to the horsens train station. their design was selected for its dynamic design that linked the city’s existing infrastructure with the new spaces. the studio’s aim was to ‘create a vibrant cultural and commercial hub for the city.’ despite the large scale of the masterplan, schmidt hammer lassen paid close attention to giving each building a strong architectural identity.
