Rhythmic LANE unfolds in Leung Shuen Bay Public School’s court

Rhythmic LANE, a collaborative effort by Napp Studio & Architects and Fragrant Village, draws from the cultural significance of sound and architecture in Leung Shuen Bay Public School. The communal memory centers around the rhythmic school bell manually struck on a metal tank. This sound marks various events, fostering a sense of community among students and alumni. The installation, situated along basketball court lines, takes the form of a bench and a xylophone. This dual-purpose piece integrates music and architecture, offering visitors a multisensory experience.

quotes and lyrics are engraved on the wooden stepped lane

Spheres of different materials can be rolled along the installation, producing rhythmic tones reminiscent of the school bell. Engaging with the installation, visitors encounter engraved lyrics on one side of the wooden parts, reflecting the community’s collective voice from various workshops. Meanwhile, edited quotes from alumni capture memories related to the school. The middle section of the installation transforms into a seating bench, inviting visitors to pause and absorb the surroundings. Napp Studio & Architects and Fragrant Village thoughtfully integrate sound, community engagement, and functional design enriching the site, and creating an immersive experience that resonates with the shared history and culture of the school.
