in brisbane, australia, shaun lockyer architects has extended and refurbished a traditional queenslander house to create a contemporary home with stylish interiors and lush outdoor living spaces. unique to the state of queensland, queenslander architecture refers to a common housing type that dates back to the 1840s and is still prevalent today. the style is characterized by low-set, detached timber dwellings, which generally feature a shaded veranda to combat the hot climate.

situated within the leafy new farm neighborhood, the recently completed project embodies overtly subtropical themes, with deep overhangs, protected edges and the greening of roof planes to create a soft edge to the hard, heavy concrete. to align with the two different street frontages, danny’s house features two distinct personalities. the front elevation is clad in black painted timber and pays homage to the quintessential queenslander architecture. in contrast, the rear elevation is characterized by the use of exposed concrete, creating a much more contemporary feel. with these two different faces, shaun lockyer architects manages to connect to the past while bringing the house into the present.

the use of exposed concrete and timber continues inside, creating a seamless transition from outside. the raw concrete material is complemented by the warm timber, black color accents and splashes of luxurious marble. despite the dominant black and grey colors, the interior spaces are bright and open thanks to large expanses of glass and light curtain partitions. a collection of elegant furnishings supplied by space furniture completes the space.

the extension and refurbishment of danny’s house marks a truly collaborative project between the builders, sub-contractors, consultant team and client, all rounded off with bespoke landscaping and a fully tailored interior. this project was a joy for all involved and this positive energy is now resonant in the built outcome.’ – shaun lockyer architects
