35 years after the institution was inaugurated, the aspen art museum in colorado, USA opens its doors to the public on august 9th, 2014. the design, by pritzker laureate shigeru ban, is defined by a woven timber screen spanning two of the building’s four façades. a glazed curtain wall contrasts the latticed elevations, exposing structural elements and revealing internal gallery space to passersby. currently under construction, the grid-like skin allows natural light to enter, creating a intricate play between light and shadow throughout the cultural center’s volumes.

designboom has received exclusive model images of the project, documenting in more detail the design’s form and its differing façades. photographed by tony prikryl, the replica indicates spatial relationships as well as potential landscaping. the growth of the cultural institution in recent years has seen a 200% increase in budget and the annual number of visitors. consequently, the brief called for the expansion and relocation of the existing museum at the corner of spring street and hyman avenue in aspen.
