for this year’s edition of milan design week, pritzker prize winner shigeru ban installed the paper temporary studio in the courtyard of palazzo serbelloni during louis vuitton’s objets nomades exhibition. originally intended as a temporary office during the design and construction of his centre pompidou metz, the structure was first built atop the parisian museum in 2004. using the language of paper tubes and brilliant joinery so characteristic of ban’s work, the temporary space showcased the trademark techniques and ingenuity of his best projects.

a pioneer in using paper tubes — a versatile and inexpensive material — shigeru ban and louis vuitton started their collaboration in 2006, as part of the french house’s icônes exhibition. for the show, ban created a domed structure inspired by the papillon bag and built on the roof terrace of the maison champs-élysées. continuing with their collaboration, louis vuitton invited the japanese architect to bring the paper temporary studio to milan.

designed as an open plan semicircular space clad in rich, wide-grained wood, the structure gives the sensation of a plane cabin. with circular windows on both sides, the pavilion is naturally illuminated while featuring a straightforward circulation. for the exhibition in milan, visitors were able to browse pictures and models of the architect’s most impressive work, demonstrating how he has been aiding those in need with his temporary shelter solutions as well as how he has left a mark in the architecture world.
