situated in a residential neighborhood of hyogo, japan, shogo aratani architect & associates has completed ‘krampon’, a private residence built into a steep slope. configured in relation to the landscape and minimizing excavation, the property’s three volumes are placed along the sloped ground. the rock excavated during construction has been recycled and used as part of the surrounding pavement and the steps leading to the dwelling’s entrance.

the home’s primary spaces are located at the upper level of the property, providing expansive and unrestricted views across the region. located below the canopy of two trees, the uppermost volume contains a large skylight bringing natural light into the living room. a decked terrace extends from the living room, which forms the roof of the more private rooms below. the stairway connecting the two levels is used as a library, accommodating a large number of books.
