sigurd larsen clads monolithic danish house in blue corrugated steel

located on top of a small hill in the western part of roskilde, near copenhagen, ‘blå hus’ by sigurd larsen is a monolithic family house clad in a layer of blue corrugated steel. the tall and narrow residence benefits from views over the fjord and towards the medieval city center, while the color of its exterior allows it to blend in with the dark blue hues of the scandinavian sky. inside, the home spreads over two main floors, complete with a garden and a large terrace facing southwest.all images by tia borgsmidt

sigurd larsen design & architecture has developed the upper level of the house as a lightweight wooden construction, built on top of an old brick house from the 1950s. all façades and the roof of the house are clad in a layer of blue corrugated steel, which acts as a climate shield and offers extra insulation to the existing lower part. ‘on foggy and rainy days the house emanates its bright colorful optimism against the desaturated background by highlighting the blue tones of the grey mist,’ notes larsen.

the house’s main living space spreads over two floors, with the mid floor containing an open kitchen and dining room that opens onto the garden through a large terrace facing southwest. the upper level encloses a living room with a large corner window overlooking the fjord and cathedral, as well as a balcony for enjoying the sunsets. the family home is complete with two children rooms, each with its own individual character. the first one features a horizontal space with a panorama window along the drawing desk, while the second is a vertical room with a loft bed that includes a small window at the highest point of the house.
