henning larsen to bring a new ferry terminal to the faroe islands

Backdropped by the open seas of Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, Henning Larsen‘s proposed Smyril Line ferry terminal is set to be built. The project pays homage to traditional Faroese fishing boats and the historic Eastern harbor, while also serving as a multi-functional space for ferry services, offices, and logistics. With its innovative design, the terminal aims to reconnect Torshavn’s residents with the Eastern harbor, giving the harbor back to the people.

contemporary design driven by nostalgia

The architects at Henning Larsen note that Torshavn’s Eastern harbor holds a special place in the hearts of the Faroese people. It was once the primary gateway connecting the Faroe Islands with the rest of the world, and it evokes a sense of nostalgia for many. Departing loved ones and leisurely strolls along the water are fond memories captured in 1950’s black and white photographs. However, in recent years, the harbor was closed to the public due to port security measures. Henning Larsen’s design aims to recapture the essence of those nostalgic moments by separating passengers and freight, thus allowing the historic promenade to reconnect with the capital.henning larsen smyril line

the new smyril line terminal Blends Tradition with Modernity

The new Smyril Line terminal stands in a prominent location in central Torshavn, standing as a luminous beacon within the surrounding landscape. The architectural elements combine wood and concrete, paying tribute to Faroese culture and traditions. The wooden structure reflects the graceful contours of traditional Faroese fishing boats, which have a rich history dating back to Viking times. These boats are even included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Additionally, the base structure of the building mirrors the hand-built coastal paths found on smaller Faroese islands, providing a sense of authenticity and easy boat access from the water.

Adapting to the Nordic Climate

As a crucial hub for Smyril Line’s passenger ferries across Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland, the Henning Larsen-designed terminal will accommodate the changing seasons and the Nordic climate. Ensuring a seamless experience for arriving and departing passengers, the design prioritizes functionality and adaptability.

A dedicated vehicle drop-off area leads directly to the main entrance, which houses a public waiting room, café, registration desk, and International Ship and Port Facility Security area. The upper waiting room grants access to a terrace ramp, where visitors can relax amidst greenery and enjoy impressive views. This space embodies the connection between the community and outside visitors, revitalizing public accessibility to the area. The ramp’s lush landscape features native Faroese vegetation and offers an elevated vantage point of the city.

integrating an internal garden

In perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape, the office’s standout feature is an expansive private internal garden. Designed by Henning Larsen, the landscape architecture of the multi-level outdoor garden creates a serene and refreshing atmosphere for employees to enjoy. The garden complements the spacious open-concept canteen, serving as a retreat where employees can rejuvenate amidst nature. The combination of the internal garden and the canteen provides a unique opportunity for employees to find solace and inspiration within their work environment.
