st. louis symphony orchestra announces $100m makeover

 

st. louis symphony orchestra (SLSO) has selected snøhetta to lead the renovation and 6,039 sqm (65,000 sqft) expansion of its powell hall concert venue in midtown st. louis, missouri. the project, estimated at more than $100 million, will transform the building into a vibrant and accessible music center for the community while preserving its historic character. first built in 1925 as a cinema, powell hall became the symphony orchestra’s permanent home in 1968 and was added to the national register of historic places in 2001.

 

‘this is an exciting chapter in the SLSO’s history,’ said st. louis symphony orchestra president and CEO marie-hélène bernard. ‘the project will improve every aspect of the audience and artist experience and will better support our mission as performers and educators, enriching lives through the power of music and fostering a sense of belonging for everyone. we will preserve the history of powell hall while also creating a hub for community, innovation, and powerful music experiences.’

making powell hall more functional and enjoyable for all

 

the huge 6,039 sqm expansion will include a new 316 sqm (3,400 sqft) education and learning center that will serve as a rehearsal venue an educational space, a new accessible lobby, and a backstage space with expanded amenities for artists.

 

the powell hall renovation will improve accessibility with additional seating, handrails and three new elevators, update existing entrances and add new ones, create outdoor green spaces, and provide new amenities such as restrooms, concessions, and open gathering spaces. the extensive refurb will also reduce the auditorium’s capacity from 2,683 to 2,150 seats to provide a more comfortable and intimate audience experience while added soundproofing will reduce external noise. a state-of-the-art lighting system is to be installed and the whole building infrastructure and existing building systems are to be brought up to date.
