Snøhetta designs dynamic fan-like opera house

Located in the vibrant Expo Houtan neighborhood, the Opera House by Snøhetta (find more here) is set to emerge as a prominent cultural icon along the Huangpu River in Shanghai. At its heart, the structure unfurls like a dynamic fan, symbolizing ‘the dynamic energy of dance and a sense of public ownership,’ as the architects explain. The buiding features a distinctive rooftop that is accessible year-round, providing a communal space for all to enjoy. Comprising three auditoriums and an array of amenities, including restaurants, libraries, and cozy cinemas, the Opera House aims to attract a diverse audience spanning various age groups. The fan motif permeates the entire project, from the lobby to the halls and the three auditoriums. This multifaceted venture caters to a wide array of performances, encompassing traditional and Chinese opera, classical concerts, and experimental shows. Snøhetta has crafted the architectural, landscape, interior, and graphic design for the Opera House, partnering with Shanghai-based architects ECADI to bring this vision to life.
