koning eizenberg architecture has completed the sobieski house, a residential complex of cube-shaped compounds located in south pasadena, california. built for a family of four, the project comprises a series of folded white boxes that contain living and sleeping spaces, while burnt wood-clad walls enclose bathrooms and storage areas.

koning eizenberg architecture has constructed the house out of modest materials, as spaces are anticipated to change over time according to the family’s improvisational lifestyle. the floors in all units are layered with concrete, while painted pegboard has been used to achieve a lightweight, ‘illuminated’ ceiling. secondary indoor circulation provides residents with a short-cut route during wet weather, excluding an off grid guest house. all living and sleeping spaces have openings to the outside, while passive strategies and fan-assisted earth tubes have been used to achieve cooling and avoid the use of air conditioning.
